Southern Virginia Women's Basketball Falls To #25 Mary Washington

BUENA VISTA, VA - The Southern Virginia women's basketball team (3-1, 2-0) faced a challenging matchup against the #25 Ranked Eagles of Mary Washington (6-1, 0-0) on a brisk Tuesday night, resulting in a tough loss for the Knights.

Early in the game, Southern Virginia found themselves trailing as the Eagles secured a commanding 13-2 lead. Layups from Hailey Paige and Aysia Foster helped the Knights close the first quarter with a score of 16-8.

Mary Washington maintained their momentum, extending their lead to 26-14. A five-minute stretch with no baskets was broken by a transition bucket from Addison Newman, leaving the Knights trailing 28-16 at halftime.

In the first half, Southern Virginia struggled to find an offensive rhythm, shooting 7-22 (31.81%) from the field and 0-6 from behind the arc.

The Knights faced challenges with Mary Washington's full-court pressure in the second half, scoring five to the Eagles' 12 points. Despite the offensive struggles, Southern Virginia showed resilience in the fourth quarter. Back-to-back buckets from Maria Savvun highlighted the Knights' improved ball movement, allowing them to outscore the Eagles in the final quarter. However, the effort fell short, and the game concluded with a score of 52-35 in favor of Mary Washington.

Looking ahead, the Knights will return to conference play, heading to Meredith on Saturday, December 2nd, for the seventh meeting between the two teams. Southern Virginia holds a 6-1 advantage with a six-game win streak against Meredith. The upcoming matchup presents an opportunity for the Knights to bounce back and continue their success in conference play.
