Lynchburg, VA – The Southern Virginia women's basketball team experienced a hard-fought battle in a non-conference showdown against the Randolph College Wildcats, ultimately concluding with a narrow 56-62 defeat.
Despite finding themselves trailing early, the Knights saw a standout performance from Abigail Snyder in the first quarter. Snyder's impressive contribution, including two timely three-pointers, accounted for eight of the team's 12 points as they closed the first quarter with a score of 12-17.
The second quarter saw Aysia Foster leading the Knights with five points, but a challenging period featuring nine Southern Virginia turnovers kept them behind, heading into halftime with a 25-32 score.
The intensity escalated after halftime, marked by a flurry of points, notably Kasi Okonkwo's two three-pointers. Despite the defensive efforts of Ruth Kempler, who managed back-to-back blocks to disrupt Randolph's offensive momentum, the Wildcats maintained a slim lead, heading into the final quarter with a score of 48-42.
In the fourth quarter, both teams engaged in a highly contested exchange of points. Abigail Snyder and Addison Newman showcased their shooting prowess, connecting on crucial three-pointers. However, the Knights fell short of overcoming the deficit, and the game concluded with a final score of 56-62.
Despite Southern Virginia matching the shooting numbers of the Wildcats, turnovers proved to be a significant challenge, with Randolph holding a 29-18 lead in that category.
Looking ahead, the Knights aim to regroup and rebound after a brief respite. They are set to embark on a journey to Nashville, TN, on Tuesday, December 19th, to participate in the 2023 Music City Classic, with tip-off scheduled for 3 p.m. CST.
