BUENA VISTA, VA. — In the teams' third meeting, Hampden-Sydney College (1-0) utilized a strong first half to take home a 14-5 victory over Southern Virginia University (0-2) in Knight Stadium.
The Tigers got on the board first at the 13:51 mark when Nick Thompson drove toward the center of the field, rolled away from pressure, and got off a savvy backhand shovel shot to put Hampden-Sydney up 1-0. One minute later, Ford Burke scored an unassisted goal before Southern Virginia's
Seth Millington put himself in the scoring column after scooping up a loose ball in front of the net and putting it past the Tiger's goalie.
Hampden-Sydney controlled the rest of the half, not allowing Southern Virginia to score in the second quarter while adding three more to head into the halftime break with a 7-1 lead.
Coming out of the pause from action,
Sterling Thatcher started the second half with an unassisted goal to cut the deficit to five goals, 7-2. However, the Tigers quickly punched back with four unanswered goals, topped off by a man-down score by Gaines Weis.
Clay Haacke and
Michael Brown scored back-to-back goals at the start of the fourth, but again Hampden-Sydney had a response for the Knights. After rattling off three more goals to go up by ten, 14-4,
Gabe King recorded the game's final goal off an assist from
Clay Haacke on the man-up opportunity.
The Knights hit the road for the first time next week, traveling to Danville, Kentucky, to face Centre College in the second all-time meeting between the programs. Game time is set for Saturday, February 25, at 1 pm.
