BUENA VISTA, VA. — After earning the fourth seed in the tournament, the Southern Virginia University Women's Basketball team (12-12, 12-6) took on Meredith College in the First Round of the USA South Conference Tournament. The Knights walked away with the 66-41 victory, led by a
Courtney Olson double-double.
Olson led the way with 12 points and 15 rebounds, recording her ninth double-double.
Addison Newman led the scoring category with 13 points, shooting 55.6 percent from the field.
Aysia Foster was a menace on the court, recording a career-high five blocks against the Angels' offense.
The two teams struggled to get scoring opportunities, with only 14 combined points scored in the first seven minutes. In the first quarter, low scoring affair, Southern Virginia doubled up Meredith, 14-7, heading into the second.
The Knights' offense exploded in the second quarter, outscoring the opposition 21-4 and grabbing a 35-11 lead at the end of the first half, led by seven Newman points. The halftime score locked in season-low points allowed in a half while tying the program record. However, the scoring affair bled into the third quarter, with Southern Virginia extending their lead to 35 points, 49-14, after
Presley Heggie knocked down a three in transition.
The Avenging Angels managed to end the game on a high note, outscoring the Knights 22-17 in the final quarter.
Aysia Foster and
Abigail Snyder led the squad in the fourth with four points each, and
Taylor Miyasaki logged the last basket for the team, knocking down a three.
Southern Virginia will eye down top-seeded Greensboro College, looking to upset the conference behemoth on the road on Thursday, February 23, in the Conference Semifinals. Tip-off is set for 6 pm.
