NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Southern Virginia University Baseball team (2-5) took to the road Tuesday to go up against a tough Apprentice School (7-2) side, dropping both games of the doubleheader.
The first game saw the Builders get on the board first, with Nate Yeary grounding out but bringing in Hunter Johnson, who opened the bottom of the second inning with a single to right field. Then, after Kyle Whitlock was walked and Matt Phoebus was hit by a pitch, Apprentice loaded the bases. Isaac McCallister, however, flew out to centerfield, and Southern Virginia escaped the inning, only being down one.
Following back-to-back three-up, three-down innings, the Knights would tie the game in the top of the fifth.
Sinjun Johnson singled to right field and advanced to second on a throwing error, with
Tyson Toller reaching third on the play. He would score after a
Luke Roberts single, tying the game at one.
In the bottom of the same inning, the Builders would retake the lead after back-to-back triples saw Isaac McCallister reach home plate on Camden Weston's hit.
Southern Virginia looked to claw its way back in the following inning. After two outs in the first two at-bats,
Mitch Smith and
Jake Watson each tallied singles, but
Tyson Toller flew out to left field, ending the sixth inning.
Apprentice would add to its lead in their portion of the inning, scoring two more runs, with the second coming off a throwing error by
Sinjun Johnson as he tried to pick off the runner at third.
Three straight groundouts closed the first game with a 4-1 in favor of the Builders.
In game number two, Southern Virginia got on the board first, notching a run in the top of the second.
Jake Watson, who was walked, advanced to third following a
Stockton Hall double. A sacrifice fly by
Robert Stempin brought Watson in and gave the Knights their first lead of the afternoon.
The lead didn't last long, with the Builders evening the score in the bottom of the third. Nate Yeary opened the inning with a leadoff double and was sent to third after a flyout. Then, Caleb Russell earned an RBI following a sacrifice fly that brought Yeary home.
After three straight scoreless innings, Apprentice loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh. Camden Weston singled through the left side for a walk-off win.
The Knights have a quick turnaround, returning home to take on Ferrum College tomorrow afternoon.
