Generals Narrowly Defeat Knights In Dual Meet

BUENA VISTA,- Va. The Southern Virginia University men's wrestling team fell to Washington and Lee 24-15 on Thursday night's Old Dominion Athletic Conference dual meet. The loss drops the Knights record to (4-4) overall, and (2-3) in conference competition.

The Generals forfeited the 125 match. Jaden Nelson received the win for the Knights.

Elijah Blackwell took an early 2-0 lead after a beautiful pull through to a two point takedown. Blackwell then was able to capitalize on top and put the Generals wrestler on his back for a four point near fall ending the first period with a 6-0 advantage. Blackwell was able to wrestle hard and maintained a 6-1 lead going into the final period of the match where his lead would stay for the victory.

At 165 pounds Morgan Peterson got in an early shot opportunity but Harrison Kelly was able to fight off the attempt. Peterson had a beautiful ankle pick that he turned into an early two point takedown. Kelly however quickly got a point point escape to cut the Knight advantage 2-1. The Washington and Lee wrestler had a beautiful double leg takedown of his own and came away with a 3-2 lead at the end of the first period. Peterson started the second period on top and was able to turn Kelly to his back for a two point near fall to take back the lead, Kelly again however was able to get a one point escape tying the match 4-4. The Washington and Lee wrestler again was able to get a one point escape and took a 5-4 lead going into the third period. Peterson was unable to get out from the bottom position and lost the hard fought match 5-4.

Jak Krouse for Washington and Lee was able to get an early two points on Tyson Hoopes. The Southern Virginia wrestler was able to a one point escape and finished the first period down 4-1. Hoopes started the second period on top and was able to hold the Generals wrestler to just one point late into the period. After a 5-1 deficit Hoopes was able to get a one point escape cutting the lead to 5-2. He was then able to get two consecutive two point takedowns to send the match into overtime with a 6-6 score. Hoopes showed his resilience as he was able to get a two point takedown to secure the 8-6 victory for the Knights.

In the 184 pound class, Scott Chambers was able to secure a two point reversal after he let up an early takedown, the first period ended with a 4-2 score. Cameron Blizzard was able to showcase his incredible wrestling IQ as he was able to get a two point reversal to go up 6-2 at the end of the second period where the score would stay for the remainder of the match. 

For the final match of the night Igor Lakicevic held his opponent scoreless for a 0-0 tie at the end of the first. The Generals wrestler was able to start the period on the bottom and got an early one point escape to take the 1-0 lead. Lakicevic was down 2-3 going into the final period and was able to come away with a two point reversal and a 4-3 win to seal the victory for the Knights.
