SWEET BRIAR, Va. – In the first of three doubleheaders this week, the Southern Virginia University Softball team (3-1) took down Sweet Briar College (0-6) on the road Wednesday afternoon.
The Knights opened the scoring in game one after
Dykell Jones recorded her first home run of the year in the top of the first.
Two innings later, in the top of the third, Jones would add two more RBIs after her single brought in
Kayla Autry and
Arianna Prymak. Then, Jones would tally her second run of the day after stealing second and being brought in by an
Adisen Webster double, increasing the advantage to four.
In the top of the fourth, the Knights exploded, registering an impressive seven runs. The scoring began with Prymak doubling, sending Autry to third and
Chloe Nelson home. Jones would add to her outstanding game with two more RBIs after her single brought Autry and Prymak home. Then, a
Jaci Shumway double brought in Jones, and following a Vixen error, Shumway would score. Next, a sacrifice fly by
Mattison Christensen saw
Krystal Kemp reach home plate. After reaching first on an error and stealing second, Webster would add another run. Nelson then added her second triple of the inning to see
Katie Claytor home for the last run, making the score 12-0.
Following a double play, Anna Smith would fly out to center field in the bottom of the fifth, ending game one of the doubleheader.
"I'm really happy with my performance today," Jones declared following her 3-for-3, three-run, and five RBI outing. "I stepped into the box much more relaxed and confident than last week. I decided to focus on enjoying the time I get on the field, which showed. Also, having an amazing lineup in front and behind me helps me be confident that all I have to do is get on base, and they'll move me around."
The second game was a different story, with Southern Virginia battling back from five runs down.
The Knights got on the board first after
Matea Manuleleua led off with a double to start the contest. She would advance to third after Nelson grounded out and would score following a Claytor sacrifice fly.
It didn't take long for Sweet Briar to even the scoreline, scoring in their portion of the first inning. Kaylie Hudson led off with a single, stole second, and advanced to third on the throw. She would score after teammate Anna Smith grounded out to short.
Much like the Knights in the first game, the Vixens went on a scoring run in the bottom of the third, tallying five runs to take a 6-1 lead.
Southern Virginia, however, would chisel away, adding a run in the top of the fourth to cut the deficit to four following a
Krailyn Guymon run. Guymon got on base after a double in her at-bat and scored on a Webster single.
The top of the fifth saw the Knights square the match at six after a Guymon double brought in three runners. Guymon advanced to third on a wild pitch and reached home on a Shumway single.
Southern Virginia restored its lead the next inning, with Prymak scoring her first run of the game following a Manuleleua hit.
Arianna Prymak closed out the game to earn her second win of the campaign after allowing just two hits while tallying two strikeouts.
"I think today's wins reflect exactly the group of girls we have this year," expressed senior captain
Krystal Kemp. "Everyone had to contribute and do a job; it was truly a team effort."
"We played two very different games which was a really good learning experience for us," added Jones. "I think we had a lot of success at bat because we communicated what we saw at the plate through the lineup, and everyone made adjustments. I also think the coaches giving us feedback on adjustments we should be making and encouraging us the entire time led to our success in both games."
"The thing I love most about our team is our never give up attitude, so I didn't have any doubt we'd battle back. In our affirmations before the game, we said, 'we are resilient, gritty, and we are going to win'—and that's exactly what we did!"
"I think everyone played a great game, and we all worked well together," stated
Krailyn Guymon, who led the team in game two with three RBIs, two hits, and two runs. "It was great to have runners on base so that people could score. Especially being up to bat with the bases loaded made scoring the runs we needed easier."
"I think a comeback win will give us a lot of momentum going into the rest of the games this week. The grit and fight we found will help us tremendously moving forward."
The Knights will play their second road game in as many days when they take on Eastern Mennonite University tomorrow, Thursday, Mar. 2.
