BUENA VISTA, Va. – The Southern Virginia University Baseball team (6-5) stretched its home win streak to four after a high-scoring affair against Plattsburgh State (1-2) on Saturday afternoon.
The visitors got on the board first with a solo home run by Alex Kornblau in the top of the first. The Knights, however, didn't take long to fight back, taking the lead in their portion of the inning following a monster triple to center field by
Mitch Smith. The hit brought in
Seth Lloyd, who led off with a double, and
Nick Daynes.
In the top of the third, the Cardinals restored their lead after Kornblau's second hit out of the park. The three-run homer blasted over the center field wall made the score 4-2.
It again didn't take long for Southern Virginia to take control of the game, adding five runs in the bottom of the third. Smith again brought a runner home to open the scoring, with
Will Parker scoring following Smith's single. Then, two RBIs off a
Benjamin Agnew double saw the Knights retake the lead, 5-4. Agnew and Benji Horsley would be brought in by a
Jackson Massey single, increasing the advantage to three.
The Knights increased their lead in the bottom of the fourth, adding two runs after
Marcelino Leonardo Jr. brought in Daynes and Parker from second and third, respectively.
Plattsburgh, however, started its comeback in the next inning, tallying two runs after another home run, the team's third of the afternoon. Kyle Cremin's shot past the wall also brought in Kornblau for his third run of the contest.
The Cardinals cut the deficit to two after another tally in the top of the sixth following an error by the Knight's defense. The visitors, carrying momentum after getting out of a bind in the bottom of the sixth, added another run in the next inning. Christian Ott reached first and eventually scored, on an error, making the score 9-8.
Ryan Farris came to the mound for the Knights in the final two innings. The freshman from Greenville, Virginia, was phenomenal, holding the Cardinals without a hit and registering three strikeouts to close out the game and stifle the comeback attempt. The save is Farris's first of his young career.
Mitch Smith was also impressive again, leading the team with three RBIs off two hits.
Southern Virginia will now travel to Danville, Virginia, to take on Averett University on Tuesday, Mar. 14.
