THROGGS NECK, NY. — In a tightly contested matchup, Southern Virginia University's women's lacrosse team came up short against Maritime College, falling 11-12 in a hard-fought battle.
Maritime College struck first with a goal from Nicole Johnson, assisted by Gabrielle Nicolosi. However, the Knights quickly responded with a goal from
Alissa Johnson to tie things up at 1-1. Maritime then took control, scoring two unanswered goals from Morgan Tracy to take a 1-3 lead. Southern Virginia's
Rylee Webster cut the lead to one with a goal at the 4:26 mark, but Maritime responded with a goal from Neuwirth to make it 2-4 at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Southern Virginia's
Piper Searle scored an unassisted goal to cut the lead to one again, but Maritime responded with goals from Jenna Lesiewicz and Tracy to extend their lead to 4-6.
Alissa Johnson scored her second goal of the game for Southern Virginia to cut the lead to 4-6 at halftime.
Maritime pulled away with goals from Neuwirth and Nicolosi in the third, but Searle answered with an unassisted goal to make it 5-9 at the end of the quarter.
The Knights came out strong in the fourth quarter, with Searle scoring two more goals to complete her hat trick and bring the score to 7-9.
Kate Richards added a goal to make it 8-10, but Maritime College responded with goals from Tracy and Nicolosi to extend their lead to 8-12.
Alissa Johnson scored two more goals for Southern Virginia but ultimately fell short, losing 11-12.
Despite the loss,
Alissa Johnson and
Piper Searle had impressive performances, each scoring four goals. Southern Virginia will look to bounce back in their next game and build on the positives from the hard-fought matchup.
The Knights make the trip to Ashland, Virginia, to take on Randolph-Macon College on Tuesday, March 14. The opening draw is set for 7 pm.
