BUENA VISTA, VA – The Southern Virginia University Men's Lacrosse team made a commanding statement with a 17-6 win over the Methodist University Monarchs in a USA South Conference game on Saturday afternoon at Knight Stadium. The Knights had a strong offensive performance, with seven players contributing to the scoring in the game.
Southern Virginia started strong, with
Gabe King's goal at 14:04 of the first period assisted by
Connor Haacke.
JT Cutrer followed suit with another goal just under two minutes later, assisted by
Sterling Thatcher.
Jon Yandow added to the Knight's early lead with an unassisted goal at the 10:01 mark of the first period.
Davis Grant and
Peyton Merwin also contributed goals to bring the Knight's lead to 6-0 at the end of the first period.
In the second period, Southern Virginia continued to dominate with goals from
Connor Haacke,
JT Cutrer, and
Jon Yandow. Methodist University responded with a goal from Hunter Vaughan at the 8:42 mark of the second period, but
Davis Grant,
Jon Yandow, and
Peyton Merwin each added a goal of their own, bringing the score to 12-1 at halftime.
The third period saw a brief surge from the Monarchs, with goals from Jacob Burnette, Hunter Vaughan, and Matt Bentz. However, the Knights answered with goals from
Gabe King. Going into the final period, Southern Virginia held a 14-4 lead.
Methodist University fought hard in the fourth period, but goals from Jordan Frenzen and Cy Horner were not enough to overcome the Knight's commanding lead.
Jon Yandow added his fifth goal of the game, and
Davis Grant and
Peyton Merwin each added their third goals to bring the final score to 17-6.
Overall, the Knights had a strong offensive showing, with
Jon Yandow contributing a team-high five goals and one assist.
Davis Grant and
Peyton Merwin each recorded their first-career hat tricks, while
Gabe King and
JT Cutrer added two.
Sterling Thatcher also had an impressive showing with three assists. Southern Virginia's defense also shined, holding Methodist University to just six goals on the day, led by
Colton Stanley's four caused turnovers and
Michael Brown's six ground balls.
The Knights will look to continue their momentum with another conference game against Greensboro College on the road, scheduled for Tuesday, April 4, at 5 pm.
