BUENA VISTA, Va. – In the final contest of the three-game series against Mary Baldwin University (4-23, 0-12), the Southern Virginia University Baseball team (10-17, 3-9)—repping its new pinstripe uniforms—secured the sweep with a 6-2 victory Tuesday afternoon.
The scoring didn't get started until the bottom of the third when
Ty Martinez—a day after receiving conference player and rookie of the week honors after going 8-for-12 (.667) with a .692 on-base percentage, and a 1.500 slugging percentage to go along with eight runs scored, ten RBI, four doubles, two home runs last week—added another home run. The shot over the left field wall brought in
Will Parker and
Marcelino Leonardo Jr., giving the Knights a 3-0 lead.
Mary Baldwin was quick to answer, tallying a run in the top of the fourth after a sacrifice fly brought in a run to cut the deficit to two.
Southern Virginia, however, extended the advantage in their portion of the inning, bringing in three more runs.
Nate McCallum led off with a single to center field and would advance to third on a perfectly executed bunt by
Seth Lloyd. A Parker groundout brought in McCallum and pushed Lloyd to second.
Nick Daynes then stepped up to the plate, sent a laser to left center, and wheeled around the bases to third, tallying an RBI with Lloyd reaching home. A Leonardo Jr. double to right field would send Daynes home to close the scoring.
After two scoreless innings, the Squirrels would add a run in the top of the seventh. Still, they could not generate any more offense in the final two innings, with
Stockton Hall registering his first save of the year after allowing just one hit in the final six outs.
Southern Virginia will look to build on its sweep when it takes on Methodist in a three-game series beginning on Friday, April 14.
