Knights Sweep Eagles in Non-Conference Doubleheader

BUENA VISTA, Va. – In a break from league play, the Southern Virginia University Softball team (19-15) took on Mary Washington (18-16) at Harvey-Dryden Field Wednesday afternoon, sweeping the two-game series, 4-2 and 6-1.

After just one hit between the two teams in the first two innings, both teams tallied a run in the third inning.

The two schools went three-up, three-down in the fourth inning before the Knights took control of the contest in their portion of the fifth. The scoring opened with Chloe Nelson reaching home all the way from first after the pitcher overthrew the throw to first as Emily Oldham laid down a bunt. Oldham then stole second and advanced to third on an Arianna Prymak single to left field. Dykell Jones then grounded out to short but tallied an RBI as Oldham reached home. A Jaci Shumway single through the right side brought in Prymak to close the inning's scoring, putting the Knights up 4-1.

The Eagles were quick to bounce back, getting on the board in the top of the sixth. Grace Drury led off with a double to right field. After advancing to third on a passed ball, Drury scored on a Brigid Ward groundout, cutting the deficit to two.

Southern Virginia secured the 4-2 victory in the first game after Chloe Persinger held Mary Washington without a hit in the final inning.

The home team got off to a great start in game number two, getting on the board in the bottom of the first, with Prymak reaching home after leading off the inning with a walk to get on base.

In the bottom of the third, the Knights would increase the advantage. Adisen Webster led off with a double down the left field line and reached third on a fly-out by Persinger. Katie Claytor then singled through the left side, bringing in Webster to make the score 2-0.

In the following inning, the home team tallied three more runs after a Persinger double down the left-field line brought in Prymak, Kemp, and Webster.

The Eagles scored their first run of the game in the top of the sixth after a sacrifice fly by Savannah Jaecks brought in Kennedy Darling. The Knights, however, were quick to restore its five-run lead, tallying a run in the bottom of the sixth. Webster added to her stellar performance, registering a triple to right field that brought in Shumway.

In the final inning, Kemp did well from the circle, forcing three straight groundouts to close the contest, awarding Southern Virginia the 6-1 win. During the game, Kemp allowed just four hits while recording three Ks.

Offensively, the Knights were led by Webster, who went a combined 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI. Persinger's three RBI were the most of any player between the two games.
