GREENSBORO, N.C. – In the final road series of the campaign, the Southern Virginia University baseball team (12-22, 4-14) faced off against Greensboro College (16-18, 10-7), dropping three games, including two tight contests.
After the start of the series was delayed due to weather, the teams opened up play with a doubleheader on Saturday. The Knights were the first to get on the board in the first game, with
Nick Daynes reaching the plate after a
Marcelino Leonardo Jr. RBI. The lead would increase to two in the next inning after
Jackson Massey singled to center field, bringing Benji Horsley home.
A flurry of runs in the bottom of the third would give the Pride their first lead of the game. The home team's scoring opened up with an Evan Sykes double, bringing in two runs to square the contest at two. Two at-bats later, Cameron Edmonds singled to center field, sending Sykes home for the Pride's first advantage. After the Knights recorded their first out on a fielder's choice, Moses Lopez recorded an RBI double to right field. With two runners on base, an Avery Bishop homer made the score 7-2 before the final two outs ended the inning.
Southern Virginia bounced back quickly, adding two runs in the top of the fourth. With two outs on the board,
Seth Lloyd doubled to right field, bringing in
Sinjun Johnson all the way from first. On the next at-bat,
Will Parker singled to right field, scoring Lloyd. Southern Virginia would again cut into the deficit after a Horsley triple to left center brought in
Ty Martinez in the top of the fifth.
Greensboro would restore its three-run advantage in their portion of the inning. Drake Carrick's sacrifice fly sent Louis Berini home, making the score 8-5.
Following scoreless sixth and seventh innings, the Knights tallied two runs in the top of the eighth to trim the Pride lead to just one. After Parker was walked and a pitch hit Daynes, Leonardo Jr. singled to center field, sending Parker home. After another walk,
Mitch Smith reached the base on balls for an RBI as Daynes scored. The Pride escaped without further damage, recording two outs with the bases still loaded.
After adding a run in the bottom of the eighth, Greensboro recorded three quick outs, including two strikeouts, in the top of the ninth to seal the game-one victory.
Game two began with two runs in the bottom of the first, giving the Pride an early lead. After three straight scoreless innings, both teams tallied runs in the fifth inning, making the score 4-1 in favor of the home team.
Greensboro would explode in the bottom of the sixth, scoring nine runs to take control of the contest. The visitors were unable to make a dent in the deficit in the top of the seventh, ending the game after seven innings.
In the series' final game on Monday, both teams would get on the board in the opening inning, with both runs coming off wild pitches. The Pride would add another tally in the bottom of the second after Sykes was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
The Knights would tie the game at two in the top of the fourth on a Martinez triple to left center bringing in Leonardo Jr. In the top of the fifth, the visitors would take their first lead of the contest, with Johnson scoring on a sacrifice fly by Parker.
The bottom of the sixth saw Greensboro retake the lead, adding three runs to make the score 5-3. The hosts would increase their advantage to four after two more tallies in the following inning.
Southern Virginia, however, would not go away without a fight, using a big eighth inning to get back into the game. The scoring started with a
Tyson Toller double to left field that racked up three RBI, with Martinez, Leonardo Jr. and Daynes scoring. After a Horsley single to center field advanced Toller to third,
Ryan Farris registered a groundout RBI as Toller reached the plate to knot the game at seven.
In the bottom of the eighth, a Sykes solo home run gave the Pride the lead, and they secured the series sweep after three quick outs in the top of the ninth.
Southern Virginia will close out the regular season with a series against William Peace, which begins on Friday, April 28.
