Southern Virginia Topples League-Leading Greensboro Behind Prymaks Seven K's

GREENSBORO, N.C. – On Tuesday afternoon, the Southern Virginia University Softball team (15-11, 3-5) took on Greensboro College (23-5, 7-1) in a conference doubleheader, with the Knights splitting games against the previously undefeated in conference play Pride.

Southern Virginia looked primed to get on the board first in the opening inning of game one, with the bases loaded after Jaci Shumway reached on a fielder's choice, a single to center field by Dykell Jones and Adisen Webster was walked but with two outs, Greensboro pitcher, Lauren Engel, struck out Krailyn Guymon to escape the inning unscathed.

In their portion of the first, the Pride got on the board quickly, scoring on the third at-bat. After the lead-off hitter was struck out by Arianna Prymak, a single to right field got Madison Dillner on base. She reached the plate from first on a double to center field by Alexis Sox. With runners on second and third, Prymak tallied her second strikeout of the inning to change the sides.

Following three scoreless innings, there was a flurry of runs in the fifth. The Knights opened the scoring with Prymak reaching home on a Jones single to center field. On the next at-bat, Krystal Kemp loaded the bases with a single to left field, pushing Jones to second and Shumway to third. Webster then hammered the ball up the middle for a crucial RBI that saw the Knights take the lead. However, the scoring wouldn't stop there. Jones would reach the plate after a single by Guymon. On the next at-bat, Chloe Persinger grounded out but brought in Chloe Cochran, who was running for Kemp, giving the Knights a 4-1 lead before a pop-up ended the top of the inning.

The Pride would chip away in their portion, with a wild pitch with the bases loaded advanced all runners, including Dillner, who got home to cut the deficit to two. A Prymak strikeout on the next at-bat would get the Knights out of a bind with runners on second and third.

Greensboro would again tally a run in the bottom of the sixth, setting up for an intense final inning.

After a three-up, three-down top of the seventh, Southern Virginia eyed its first victory over Greensboro in program history, needing just three outs. Prymak continued her outstanding play, forcing two foul outs and a groundout to secure the triumph. She would end with just one earned run and seven Ks while forcing nine groundouts.

On the offensive side, Jones led the team with three hits on four at-bats, registering a run and an RBI.

The Pride would bounce back in game number two, holding the Knights to just three hits and no runs in a low-scoring affair, 2-0.

Southern Virginia will continue on the road, taking on NC Wesleyan in an important doubleheader on Saturday, April 8.
