FAYETTEVILLE, NC. — In a closely contested matchup on Saturday, Southern Virginia University's football team faced off against Methodist University on the road for a Week Four showdown. Despite their efforts, the Southern Virginia Knights succumbed to Methodist's late-game surge, ultimately losing by a score of 21-27.
The game, which marked the fifth all-time meeting between the two teams, proved to be another hard-fought battle in their rivalry. With Methodist University now boasting a 5-0 record against Southern Virginia, the Knights were determined to change the narrative this time around.
The first quarter saw Southern Virginia take the early lead when
Alex Lanktree scored a 21-yard touchdown run, successfully capitalizing on their opening drive. Southern Virginia's kicker,
Jarom Reed, added the extra point to give the Knights a 7-0 advantage.
Methodist University, however, responded swiftly with a 16-yard touchdown pass from Brandon Bullins to A'Jani Mainer. Samuel Andrae's successful kick tied the game at 7-7.
Southern Virginia regained the lead in the second quarter when
Walter Collins rushed for a 1-yard touchdown. Reed's extra point put the Knights ahead 14-7.
The third quarter featured a spectacular 82-yard touchdown pass from
Lachlan Haacke to
Isaac McMullin, extending Southern Virginia's lead to 21-7.
Methodist University mounted a remarkable comeback as the game entered the final quarter. Bullins connected with Andre Wilson for a 13-yard touchdown pass, narrowing the gap to 21-14. With just six seconds left on the clock, Bullins found Anthony Melvin for an 18-yard touchdown pass, tying the game at 21-21 and sending it into overtime.
In overtime, Methodist University sealed their victory with a 9-yard touchdown run by Sajari Love, securing a 27-21 win over the Knights.
Southern Virginia returns home on Saturday, September 30, to take on LaGrange College in Knight Stadium. Opening kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
