LEXINGTON, VA. — The Southern Virginia University women's volleyball team wrapped up competition at the Washington and Lee Invitational Saturday afternoon, finishing with a 1-3 overall record.
In the day's first match, the Knights took on the Saints of Marymount University. Southern Virginia managed to get the upper hand from the beginning and never looked back, sweeping their opposition.
Sydney Bassett led all players with 15 kills,
Brookelyn Madland with nine, and
Jilane Pedersen with five.
Taryn Anderson quarterbacked the offense, leading the team with seven assists, while
Jessica Ensley added three service aces.
Southern Virginia finished the match as a team, hitting .221 percent, securing 37 total kills to Marymount's 19.
Defensively, Ensley led all players with ten digs while Bassett added nine. At the net,
Katelyn Wankier dominated with seven blocks, while
Abbie Anderson and Bassett had four.
The remainder of the tournament saw the Knights struggle, falling in the ensuing three matches to Randolph-Macon, Maryville, and Washington and Lee.
Overall, Bassett led the team with 32 total kills, while
Brenna Clyde added 22. On the opposite side of the ball,
Jessica Ensley did all she could with 47 digs and four service aces, and
Abby Gregory impressed with a team-high five aces during the weekend.
Southern Virginia debuts in their home opener next Saturday, September 16, for a two-game afternoon against conference foes Pfeiffer and Meredith. The Knights take on the Falcons at noon and the Avenging Angels at 4 p.m.
