Staunton, VA - The Southern Virginia men's basketball team faced Mary Baldwin University in a challenging matchup in Staunton, VA, resulting in a 47-60 loss. Despite a promising start last year in the USA South playoffs against the Fighting Squirrels, the Knights now hold a 2-4 record against them.
The Knights encountered early difficulties in the first half, grappling with turnovers and scoring challenges. Sam Jex emerged as a scoring force for Southern Virginia, contributing 8 points, including a flawless 2-2 performance behind the arc and a layup.
As the first half progressed, Mary Baldwin gained momentum in the paint, outscoring and outrebounding the Knights, leading to a halftime score of 22-34 in favor of the Squirrels.
Coming out of halftime with renewed energy, Southern Virginia managed to score 10 unanswered points, narrowing the lead to just 4. However, at the 9-minute mark, the Squirrels took control with eight unanswered points, reestablishing a 14-point lead.
Despite the Knights' efforts to mount another offensive push, highlighted by three-pointers from Koa Baker and DJ Green, the lead proved insurmountable, and Southern Virginia ultimately fell 47-60.
Mary Baldwin's dominance on the boards, outrebounding the Knights 48 to 37, provided them with more second-chance opportunities. On the defensive end, the Knights limited Mary Baldwin to 34.4% (22-64) shooting from the field and 20.0% (5-25) from beyond the arc.
Looking ahead, the Knights aim to carry their defensive efforts into the next game scheduled for Saturday, January 20th, against Methodist University.
