Knights Football Falls to Blazers in Conference Matchup

Jackson, Mississippi — The Southern Virginia University football team fell to Belhaven University in a conference matchup, 17-38.

The Knights started strong, with Amarie Gilchrist grabbing an interception on Belhaven's opening drive. While Southern Virginia couldn't capitalize immediately, they put points on the board later in the first quarter with a 20-yard field goal by Gage Butler, set up by key plays from Tyreeck Hall and Tucker McCormick, giving the Knights a 3-0 lead.

Southern Virginia continued to build momentum in the second quarter with a 13-play drive that saw quarterback Devin Watson connect with Alex Silvester for a crucial fourth-down conversion. Watson then found Taylor Cardon for a touchdown, extending the Knights' lead to 10-0.

However, the Knights struggled to convert on third downs, allowing the Blazers to climb back into the game. Belhaven responded with 31 unanswered points, taking control of the contest.

In the fourth quarter, a 62-yard pass from Watson to Tre Kelso set up the Knights on the six-yard line, where Silvester caught a touchdown pass, narrowing the score to 17-31. However, Belhaven's powerful run game proved too much, and the Blazers sealed the game with a final score of 17-38.

Southern Virginia's run game struggled, with 29 attempts totaling just 103 yards, averaging 2.8 yards per carry. Quarterback Devin Watson kept the offense moving through the air, completing 21 of 37 passes for 248 yards and two touchdowns. However, the Knights had difficulty stopping Belhaven's rushing attack, as the Blazers racked up 372 rushing yards on 38 attempts, averaging 9.2 yards per carry.

The Knights remain on the road for their next game against Methodist University (1-5) on October 19th at 3:00 PM in Fayetteville, N.C.
