Southern Virginia Women's Volleyball Prevails Again

Raleigh, NC - The Southern Virginia University women's volleyball team completed a perfect weekend with wins over Averett and conference foe, William Peace. The Knights opened the tri-match by dispatching William Peace in four sets and then defeated Averett in a five-set thriller.

Match 1

After a back-and-forth start to the first set with William Peace, Southern Virginia began to separate themselves from their competition. All the Knights' main attacking leaders were firing on all cylinders to help them jump out to a 1-0 lead as Brenna Clyde delivered the final kill of the opening frame. William Peace controlled the second set. They jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, knotting the sets at one and putting some pressure on the conference-leading Knights.

In the third frame, the Knights returned to their typical selves. Ruby Blamires continued to rack up assists at an astonishing rate, while Sydney Bassett, who was the recipient of many of those sets, put the team on her back to win a tightly contested third set. Once again, Brenna Clyde came in clutch to provide the final kill of the set. Gracie Fulton and Brookelyn Madland kept the momentum in the Knights' favor during the fourth and potential match-clinching set. The team remained steady and managed to clinch the victory in the fourth, improving their conference record to 8-1 to remain atop the USA South Standings.

Match 2

In their second match, the Knights faced a non-conference opponent, Averett. The Southern Virginia starters picked up where they left off and cruised to a set one victory. The team put on a defensive clinic, particularly Gracie Fulton, who would earn a career-high 34 digs.

She also finished with three service aces to help the Knights rack up thirteen. Averett used come-from-behind wins in the second and third frames to take a 2-1 set advantage, putting the Knights on the brink of defeat. However, Southern Virginia wasn't finished and rattled off five straight points in the fourth to vault themselves into a lead they would not relinquish, knotting the sets at two apiece. In the fifth, an opening block from Ruby Blamires and Summer Hahn set the tone for the deciding set. The Knights went on to score eight of the first nine points and ultimately seal their ninth consecutive win.

Looking ahead, the team will have a week to prepare for their next slate of conference matches. The Knights will travel to Brevard, North Carolina for a tri-match with Brevard and N.C. Wesleyan. The first match will occur on Friday, October 18th, at 10:00 AM. For the most up-to-date details and information on the team, visit knightathletics.com and follow @knightwvolley on Instagram.
