Buena Vista, VA - Sparked by a remarkable starting lineup introduction, the Southern Virginia University women's volleyball team found the energy to return to the win column, defeating William Peace in straight sets on homecoming weekend, 3-0.
As the regular season winds down, the Knights felt a sense of urgency was needed to remain on pace with the leaders in the USA South. William Peace also felt the importance of the match as they went toe-to-toe with the Knights during the first set. Summer Hahn provided two important kills with the Knights trailing late in the set, vaulting them into a small lead. Brenna Clyde eventually put the finishing touches on the set, giving the Knights a 1-0 lead.
After giving up an early lead in their previous match, Southern Virginia looked to keep the hammer down in the second frame. Brookelyn Madland, Summer Hahn, and Katelyn Wankier provided a strong presence at the net, recording several blocks within the first few points.
The Knights remained steady throughout, refusing to relinquish the lead despite several strong pushes from William Peace. Sydney Bassett was spectacular again, sending numerous powerful attacks straight to the floor, untouched. She led the team in kills and recorded a sparkling hitting percentage of .452.
After winning the second set, Southern Virginia looked to be in control. Baylee Savage provided good defense, and Gracie Fulton led the team in digs again to continue her impressive campaign. The Knights led wire to wire in the third set to clinch their eleventh conference win and remain atop the conference standings, now tied with Salem for first.
The Knights will travel south to take on Salem for their next match on Wednesday, October 30th, at 6:00 PM. The match will have huge implications on regular season standings in the USA South, as both teams vie for first place and the right to host the USA South Tournament in November.
