Box Score Staunton, Va. – The Southern Virginia men's soccer team capped off their regular season with a decisive 3-1 victory over the Mary Baldwin Fighting Squirrels, securing a key win heading into the playoffs.
The Knights had a shaky start, with Mary Baldwin registering two early shots before being awarded a penalty kick in the 23rd minute, giving the Squirrels an early lead. Southern Virginia quickly responded, leveling the score just five minutes later when Benjamin Simister converted a penalty kick.
As the game progressed, the Knights began to settle in, handling the early pressure from Mary Baldwin and closing the first half just behind in shots, 3-7.
Building momentum in the second half, Southern Virginia outshot the Squirrels and saw their persistence pay off in the 79th minute. After a diving save from the Mary Baldwin goalkeeper, Evan Catten capitalized on the rebound, sending a quick shot into the back of the net to put the Knights ahead 2-1.
With renewed energy, the Knights continued to press their advantage. In the final minutes, Landon Stock struck from just outside the penalty arc, placing a shot past a diving keeper to secure the 3-1 victory.
The hard-fought win secured the Knights the #3 seed in the upcoming USA South Men's Soccer Playoffs. Their next challenge awaits as they prepare to face #6 seed Mary Baldwin again in Buena Vista on Saturday, November 2nd, in the first round of the playoffs.
