Southern Virginia Women's Soccer Ties in Shootout With Virginia State

Petersburg, VA – The Southern Virginia University women's soccer team battled to a thrilling 4-4 draw against Virginia State University in an intense offensive showdown.

The Knights started strong, pressing with two corner kicks and six shots before Abbie Klusman found the back of the net in the 16th minute, assisted by Mindi Montague, marking Klusman's fifth goal of the season. Virginia State responded immediately with a quick equalizer.

The Trojans built on their momentum, generating four shots and a corner kick before finally converting to take a 2-1 lead. Southern Virginia quickly answered, however, as Sydney Bastian scored off an assist from Paisley Hinton after a well-placed corner, tying the game at 2-2 by halftime. Despite the score, the Knights led in shots (12-9) and corner kicks (4-1).

Virginia State surged back after halftime, scoring in the 52nd minute to reclaim the lead. Southern Virginia responded with renewed energy, creating a chance in the 70th minute that Lia Savage converted to level the score once again.

Late in the game, the Trojans took the lead with a penalty kick in the 77th minute. But with resilience, the Knights pressed on, and Nessie Storey netted the equalizer in the 86th minute to secure the 4-4 tie.

The Knights return to action quickly, hosting their final regular-season home game on Wednesday, October 30, before gearing up for conference play beginning Saturday, November 2.
