Rocky Mount, NC - Despite an early goal from Benjamin Simister, the Southern Virginia University men's soccer team suffered a narrow loss to the defending USA South regular season champions, N.C. Wesleyan, 2-1 on Saturday afternoon. It marks the first loss for the Knights in nearly a month, snapping their five-game unbeaten streak.
A successful non-conference schedule has left the Knights confident heading into conference play in the USA South, and they'd be put to the test in their first match with N.C. Wesleyan. The Knights managed to tilt the play toward their opponent's goal early on, drawing three corners and several scoring opportunities. The early pressure eventually paid off when Benjamin Simister found twine in the 21st minute, marking his third goal of the campaign. Wesleyan looked to push back following the goal, but the Southern Virginia defense stood firm, limiting their chances in front of goalkeeper Dallin Chappell—however, N.C. Wesleyan snatched the momentum the Knights looked to take into halftime when they drew even in the 44th minute, leaving the teams deadlocked at one.
Dallin Chappell opened the second half with a key save after forcing several other shots wide of the cage. Attacking opportunities opened up for both sides in end-to-end action, as Benjamin Simister put a shot on goal just twenty seconds later, which was saved. Unfortunately for the Knights, their opponents would have the last word by scoring in the 67th minute to capture a 2-1 lead, one they would successfully defend through the final whistle. Dallin Chappell made three saves for the Knights, while Benjamin Simster led the team with two shots on goal.Â
Southern Virginia will look to rebound against Brevard College on Wednesday, October 9th, at Knights Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 PM. For the most up-to-date information and details on the team, visit knightathletics.com and follow @knightmsoccer on Instagram.
