Radford, VA – The Southern Virginia University men's basketball team faced a tough challenge Monday night, falling 96-50 in an exhibition contest against Division I Radford University.
The game started with both teams finding success from behind the arc, as the first seven combined field goals came from three-point range. A layup by Tyler Kartchner brought the Knights within three points at 11-14, but the Highlanders responded with a 15-0 run, taking control and building a commanding lead.
Despite the outcome, the Knights were lifted by strong individual performances. Tillman Johnson led Southern Virginia in scoring with 15 points, while Eli Ballstaedt pulled down a team-high eight rebounds. However, the Knights struggled on the offensive glass, managing just four offensive rebounds compared to Radford's 21. Turnovers also proved costly, with Southern Virginia committing 19 to Radford's 10.
The Knights now shift focus to more competition against ODAC teams as they prepare for their home opener against Shenandoah University on Saturday at 4:00 PM.
Southern Virginia looks to avenge last year's 75-85 loss after earning a one-point overtime victory against the Hornets the previous year. The Knights hold a 7-3 all-time advantage in the series.
