Buena Vista, VA - The Southern Virginia University women's basketball team will enter the Thanksgiving break on a high note by claiming their third consecutive victory. Addison Newman's superb shooting sparked a second-half surge for the Knights as they defeated Stevenson 71-51.
Southern Virginia forced their opponents into difficult shots during the first quarter, holding them to just two made field goals and seven total points. After the Southern Virginia lead became double digits, the teams played even for a significant stretch of the game, but Stevenson could not bridge the gap.
A Mustangs three-pointer in the third quarter cut the lead to 47-38, but Addison Newman responded with a three-pointer of her own to ignite her team to a 7-0 run to end the quarter. Ruth Kempler provided excellent defense with two blocks and led the game with 11 rebounds
The Knights remained steady in the final frame and managed to extend their lead by a few points to close another victory, 71-51.
Abigail Snyder, the reigning USA South Player of the Week, was particularly impressive in the latter stages and hit a couple of three-pointers to ice the game. Her 23 points were a game-high, as well as her seven assists.
Hailey Paige was the third Knight to reach double figures in scoring, delivering another solid all-around performance. She helped the Knights dominate the rebounding battle by a wide margin. They grabbed 49 boards, including 16 on the offensive glass, compared to Stevenson's 29.
The Knights will resume competition after the Thanksgiving break when they welcome the ninth ranked team in the land, Christopher Newport, to Knight Arena on Wednesday, December 4th, at 6:00 PM.
