Brevard, NC - In a thrilling semifinal of the USA South Men's Soccer Tournament, the Southern Virginia University men's soccer team fell short of a victory and were defeated in penalties, 4-5.
Looking to clinch a berth in the USA South championship match for the first time in program history, the Knights had plenty to play for during their matchup with the defending tournament champions, Brevard College. In the first half, neither team managed to apply much pressure offensively and the game remained scoreless after forty-five minutes.
A battle of possession continued in the second half, until the 58th minute. A shot from the left side of the Knights' cage squeezed through the arms of Dallin Chappell, providing Brevard with the all important first goal. Despite capturing the lead, Brevard kept the pedal down, launching several more shots towards Chappell who was able to stand his ground.
With the momentum tilted in the host's favor, the Knights refused to go away. They earned several free kicks and corners but weren't able to cash in. However, Porter Whitlock was taken down in the 70th minute to set up another free kick opportunity from 30 yards. Jackson Gorringe lofted a set piece towards the goal while Nicholas Simmons slashed through the box, leaving it to bounce past everyone and into the net.
With the momentum swaying the Knights direction, and possibly some frustration settling in for their opponents, Southern Virginia looked to pounce. Benjamin Simister had the final two shots of regulation, sending both of them wide in the final minutes to send the game into sudden death overtime.
In the first overtime period, the teams traded chances, but none were more dangerous than what came in the final minute. The Knights were able to stave off a critical free kick opportunity for Brevard from twenty yards out, while just thirty seconds later, Benjamin Simister set up Zach Bartholomew at the top of the box who launched a shot into the arms of the keeper.
After the second overtime, the game was still tied and would require penalties. After each team scored on their first three attempts, the Knights sent their fourth attempt wide, giving Brevard the lead after they scored on their fourth attempt. Eventually, the match would come down to Brevard's final attempt. Unfortunately for the Knights, it would not be the storybook ending that they envisioned as their opponents scored to clinch a spot to defend their title in the championship game.
Despite the loss, the Knights experienced a season of growth and exciting play, becoming one of the most dynamic offensive teams in the league. They end the season with ten wins and their deepest run in the conference tournament since joining the USA South.
