Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Quin Meyer

Dominant Performance Gives Southern Virginia Women’s Basketball Opening Win

Lynchburg, VA - It was an entertaining night of Southern Virginia University women's basketball, who opened their season on the road at Lynchburg. The Knights rode a stingy defense and a dominant performance on the boards to a 76-44 victory.

The opening quarter became a defense clinic. The typically smooth-shooting Hornets were overwhelmed by the Knights, who held their opponent to just five points. It also helped that the Knights shot .50% from the field through the opening frame. The second quarter was much the same, except the Knights began to pile up points. Abigail Snyder led the way with 10 points while collecting two steals and three rebounds. Southern Virginia was also perfect from the free throw line, vaulting them to a 38-15 lead after twenty minutes.

As the second half began, the Knights' hot shooting was noticeable from all over the lineup. In the third quarter, they went 9-16 from the floor, improving their overall percentage even further after an excellent first half. They also dominated Lynchburg in rebounds, particularly Hailey Paige, who finished the evening with a team-high of seven to go along with a perfect night from the field.

As Southern Virginia extended the lead to as much as 60-25, the key contributions of their newcomers were apparent as well. Makayla Patterson, a junior transfer, established her presence in the paint to lead the team in offensive rebounds with three. Asia Canty and Maya Foster also found the scoresheet to bolster the team's depth.

By the fourth quarter, the Knights were in cruise control and continued to shoot well. Head Coach Lynette Schroeder was quick to use her full roster, as eleven Knights played at least ten minutes. Their fresh legs allowed them to outrun Lynchburg in transition and swarm them defensively, recording eleven steals.

The Knights ended the game with a superb .508 shooting percentage, well above their season average from last season. While that may not be expected every night, their stellar performance on the boards and perfect night from the free throw line was also nothing that should be overlooked. Abigail Snyder finished as the games leading scorer with 17 points, followed by Hailey Paige with 12.

Next on their schedule, Southern Virginia will stay close to home to face nationally ranked Washington and Lee in Lexington. The matchup will occur on Monday, November 11th, with tipoff at 7:30 PM.
