Southern Virginia Women’s Volleyball Soars Past Monarchs; Claim Top Seed in USA South

Fayetteville, NC - On a day that would determine the top seeds of the USA South women's volleyball tournament, the Southern Virginia University women's volleyball team asserted themselves as the team to beat, defeating Methodist in a sweep, 3-0

As anticipated, the first set was an evenly fought battle between two of the best squads in the conference. Brookelyn Madland delivered two aces to push the Knights to an early 6-2 advantage, but Methodist battled back to build their own lead.

Six service aces would keep Southern Virginia afloat for much of the first, and they eventually found themselves ahead, 21-18, with set point on the horizon. Madland eventually delivered the final dagger to vault her team to a 1-0 lead.

After quieting the home crowd in the opening frame, the Knights kept the momentum during the opening moments of the second. Katelyn Wankier put together a string of three points, two of them from blocks, to give her team a 9-2 lead. Southern Virginia's big hitters also found their groove as Sydney Bassett and Brenna Clyde began to fill the scoresheet. They combined for ten of the Knights' final fourteen points, lifting them to a 2-0 set lead and putting Methodist on the brink.

The third and potential final frame was statement time for the Knights. After splitting the first four points, Southern Virginia went on an 11-0 run and were led by another four service aces from Brookelyn Madland. She would finish eight of them, placing her third in the program record books for aces in a single match.

An attacking error from Methodist would close out a victory for the Knights, who finish their conference schedule with a record of 15-3. While their other conference rival, Salem, owns the same record in league play, Southern Virginia wins the tie-breaker between the two squads, which labels them the USA South regular season champions. Additionally, the Knights will host each tournament game they advance to in front of the home crowd in Knight Arena.

Southern Virginia's first-round match of the USA South tournament will take place on Tuesday, November 12th, in Buena Vista, against NC Wesleyan, the #8 seed.
