Buena Vista, VA - In their first taste of road competition in the USA South this season, the Southern Virginia University women's basketball team overcame a first-half double-digit deficit to defeat North Carolina Wesleyan, 60-47.
After a rusty first quarter and a half that saw the team trail 24-13 with just five minutes remaining in the first half, the Knights had to get on their horse to stage a come-from-behind win. Camilla Norton connected on a three-pointer off the bench to spark her team to a much-needed run. Their 17 straight points to end the half were powered by a flurry of three-pointers from four different players.
The script had flipped to begin the second half, with the Knights now leading 30-24. They managed to extend their lead by the end of the third quarter, then protected it well the rest of the way, thanks to ten total steals.
In a free throw-filled fourth quarter, Southern Virginia came out on top to record their sixth consecutive victory. Alyssa Weiland put together a stellar all-around performance, leading the team in field goal percentage and finishing with one steal. Ruth Kempler was the second Knight to score in double figures, and Aysia Foster blocked two shots as the frontcourt duo continued to produce.
Southern Virginia will have a quick turnaround as they return to the court on Saturday afternoon to face Piedmont in a neutral-site game. Tip-off is slated for 2:00 PM.
