Second-Half Surge Powers Southern Virginia Past Oglethorpe

Atlanta, Ga. – The Southern Virginia University men's basketball team relied on a stifling second-half defensive performance and balanced scoring to secure an 85-78 victory over Oglethorpe University, improving to 7-2 on the season.

The game opened with a flurry of offense, as both teams combined for 25 points in the first four minutes. Eli Ballstaedt sparked the Knights early, scoring the first five points, while Tyler Kartcher contributed six points and worked the boards to keep Southern Virginia competitive.

The fast-paced action slowed midway through the first half, highlighted by Christian Goode's emphatic fastbreak dunk that put the Knights up by four with five minutes remaining. However, Oglethorpe responded with an 8-0 run over the next three minutes to regain control.

Jude Ballstaedt momentarily halted the Stormy Petrels' momentum with a three-pointer, but Oglethorpe closed the half strong, scoring five more points. Despite two free throws from Eli Ballstaedt, the Knights entered halftime trailing 47-43.

Both teams showcased impressive shooting in the first half. Southern Virginia hit 48.5% (16-33) from the field and 41.7% (5-12) from three, led by Eli Ballstaedt's nine points, five assists, and two steals. However, Oglethorpe was even sharper, shooting a blistering 58.6% (17-29) from the field and 58.3% (7-12) from deep.

The Stormy Petrels extended their lead to nine early in the second half, but the Knights regrouped and mounted a comeback. A three-pointer by Eli Ballstaedt with 7:44 remaining gave Southern Virginia a 67-66 lead, a lead they would never relinquish.

Clutch plays down the stretch and a balanced offensive attack kept the Knights ahead. Free throws from DJ Green in the final moments sealed the win.

Key Performances:

  • Eli Ballstaedt: Led the Knights with 20 points, seven rebounds, and three steals.

  • Balanced Scoring: Tillman Johnson, Tyler Kartcher, DJ Green, and Jude Ballstaedt all reached double figures.

  • Dominance in the Paint: Southern Virginia outscored Oglethorpe 40-30 in the paint and held a 23-20 edge in second-chance points.

The Knights will look to carry their momentum into tomorrow's matchup against Piedmont University. Tipoff is set for 2:00 PM to conclude their road trip.
