Southern Virginia Women's Basketball Win In Clash With Bishops

Buena Vista, VA - The Southern Virginia women's basketball team notched another victory, improving to 18-5 overall and 16-1 in the conference after a hard-fought battle against the Bishops of N.C. Wesleyan, securing a 50-38 win.

The Knights kicked off the game by honoring Senior Emma Camden, a stalwart of the team since 2019. With an impressive 90-game tenure, Camden has logged over 1800 minutes on the court, contributing 476 points, 328 rebounds, 227 assists, 109 steals, and 17 blocks during her time with the team.

The Knights encountered early offensive struggles, shooting just 4-16 from the field and 0-5 from behind the arc, resulting in a low-scoring first quarter. However, their staunch defense limited the Bishops to just five points, leaving the game at 10-5 going into the second quarter.

In the second quarter, the Bishops mounted a comeback, narrowing the lead to just two points before the Knights found their rhythm, punctuated by Maria Savvun's first three-pointer of the game and capped off by a three-pointer from Addison Newman, extending the lead to 10 points. Savvun closed out the quarter with five consecutive points, sending the Knights into halftime with a commanding 34-20 lead.

Southern Virginia extended their lead to 18 points early in the second half but struggled offensively in the latter part of the quarter, failing to score in the final six minutes.

The Bishops staged a comeback in the fourth quarter, capitalizing on the Knights' offensive woes to narrow the gap. However, a crucial three-pointer from Savvun extended the lead to nine points, and the Knights' solid defensive effort ensured they held on for a 50-38 victory.

Aysia Foster led the scoring with 17 points on an efficient 8-12 shooting, while also making significant contributions on the defensive end with nine rebounds and two blocks. Maria Savvun followed closely with 14 points, including three three-pointers, along with three steals and six assists.

Southern Virginia concludes their regular season with a non-conference game at Christopher Newport on Wednesday, February 14th, with tip-off at 6:00 PM. They will then face Greensboro in their final conference game on Saturday, February 17th, as they prepare for the USA South Conference Playoffs.
