Buena Vista, VA - The Southern Virginia baseball team faced Averett University in the team's home opener, despite a late-game surge, the Knights fell short with a final score of 13-12.
Southern Virginia got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning when Seth Lloyd hit a home run, giving them an early 1-0 lead.
However, Averett's offense took control, establishing a 7-0 lead before the Knights mounted a comeback in the 5th inning. Ryan Farris' single and Zach Geertsen's two-run homer narrowed the deficit to 5-9. The Cougars added to their lead with runs in the 7th and 8th innings, but the Knights displayed resilience in the bottom of the eighth. Nick Daynes' double set the stage for Marcelino Leonardo Jr.'s two-run blast, bringing the score to 13-7.
In the final inning, Southern Virginia fought back strongly. A Farris single and another Geertsen home run cut the deficit to 13-9. The momentum continued with Ty Martinez's single, a Daynes RBI double, and a final run scored on a wild pitch, but the Knights fell just short, concluding the game at 13-12.
Geertsen had an impressive performance, going 2-4 with two home runs and 4 RBIs, while Daynes contributed with a 3-for-5 performance, including two RBIs and two runs. The Knights will resume game two on March 6th, following a rain delay. Next, they will face Hampden-Sydney College on Tuesday, February 27th, aiming to break a six-game losing streak to the Tigers.
