Buena Vista, VA - The Southern Virginia University women's basketball team secured their second conference championship title in three years with an impressive 69-41 victory over the North Carolina Wesleyan University Battling Bishops.
The Knights asserted themselves quickly, opening the game on a 10-0 run in the first four minutes of play, and closing the first quarter with a commanding 21-10 lead. It was more of the same dominance in the second quarter as the Knights' lead expanded to 19 points after the initial 20 minutes. Following a Battling Bishop bucket to start the third quarter, Southern Virginia embarked on another 10-0 run, extending their lead to 30 points with ten minutes remaining. Although N.C. Wesleyan staged a strong comeback in the final quarter, the Knights' lead proved insurmountable as they clinched the championship trophy.
Southern Virginia's Addison Newman led all scorers with 24 points, complemented by three rebounds, three steals, and one assist. Ruth Kempler showcased her prowess with a double-double of 15 points and a game-high in rebounds, while Maria Savvun contributed 14 points and five assists for the Knights. N.C. Wesleyan's efforts were led by Kayrisma Harrison, who posted team-highs of nine points and eight rebounds.
In the 2024 All-Tournament Team, Addison Newman, the tournament MVP, showcased her prowess with 24 points in the championship game and 22 points in the semifinals. In the two games, she shot an impressive 62.5% from the field, going 20 for 32, and demonstrated accuracy from beyond the arc, shooting 3-7 (42%). Additionally, Newman made significant defensive contributions, recording three steals and grabbing rebounds during the championship game.
Ruth Kempler demonstrated her versatility on the court, contributing 15 points, 13 rebounds, along with a block and two steals to bolster the Knights' performance.
Maria Savvun, serving as the team's point guard, provided a crucial offensive spark with 14 points, five assists, and two steals.
Abigail Snyder played a pivotal role in the Knights' defensive efforts, securing 10 rebounds and distributing four assists to facilitate the offense. Snyder's defensive prowess was instrumental in limiting the opponent's scoring opportunities, while also contributing seven points on the offensive end.
With the conference championship secured, the Knights will now turn their focus to the upcoming NCAA tournament, where they aim to continue their incredible season.
