Southern Virginia Men's Basketball Suffer Tough Loss Against Brevard

Brevard, N.C - The Southern Virginia men's basketball team faced a tough challenge against Brevard College, ultimately falling short with a final score of 66-77.

The Knights commenced the game with a flurry of action, highlighted by DJ Green's contribution of the first five points for the team. However, Brevard responded with consecutive jump shots to seize the lead. Despite Sam Jex's pivotal two three-pointers igniting the offense, turnovers and sharp shooting from the Tornadoes kept them in a narrow lead with three minutes remaining in the first half. Koa Baker's consecutive layups initiated another offensive surge, with Alex Weiland and Tyler Kartchner adding layups to close the first half trailing by a slim margin, 36-39.

Turnovers plagued the Knights in the first half, surrendering nine compared to Brevard's three. Brevard capitalized on fastbreak opportunities, outscoring Southern Virginia 17 to 6 in this regard, exploiting the turnovers to their advantage.

Entering the second half, the Knights exhibited renewed energy, scoring six unanswered points to briefly seize a 42-39 lead. However, Brevard's Jadon Carnes orchestrated an offensive surge, scoring all eight points for the Tornadoes to reclaim the lead. Despite efforts from Baker, who led all scoring, and contributions from Kartchner and Green from the free-throw line, the Knights struggled to contain Brevard's momentum. Brevard's stifling defense, coupled with their minimal turnovers compared to the Knights' 15, proved decisive in securing the victory.

Despite the loss, the Knights showcased impressive statistics, notably shooting an impressive 16-17 from the free-throw line and outrebounding the Tornadoes 35-26. Baker led the team in scoring with 22 points and eight rebounds, closely followed by Green with 18 points. Malakai Olson made his presence felt with seven rebounds and two blocks.

Looking ahead, the Knights return home to face the formidable #1 seeded Mary Baldwin on Tuesday, February 6th, with tip-off scheduled for 8:00 PM.
