Misenheimer, NC - In an electrifying overtime showdown, the Southern Virginia men's basketball team secured a heart-stopping victory against Pfeiffer University, edging out their opponents 77-75 with a buzzer-beater from Matthew Hale.
Reflecting on the game, Coach Trace Bevell remarked, "This win was exactly what we needed. It was a testament to our team's collective effort. We've been on the cusp of victory in many games, but sometimes we forget just how challenging it is to come out on top. Tonight, we were able to close out the game effectively. Every player who stepped on the court made a positive impact. Despite missing DJ, I'm incredibly proud of how the team rallied together. Matt really stepped up when it mattered most, making crucial shots under pressure. I'm optimistic about what this win signifies for our team moving forward."
The Knights asserted their dominance from the onset, with Sam Jex igniting the scoring with a three-pointer. Throughout the first half, Southern Virginia maintained their lead, led by Baker's 12 points and Griffith's nine points from beyond the arc. Their staunch defense held the Falcons at bay, resulting in a halftime lead of 38-29.
Despite trailing 20-28 in rebounds, the Knights maintained control, shooting 41.7% from three, going 5-12, and a perfect 11 from free throws. They surged ahead by as much as 18 points, while Pfeiffer struggled, managing just 1-14 from three-point range.

However, Pfeiffer mounted a fierce offensive comeback in the second half, quickly leveling the score at 50 within the first five minutes. Though the Knights kept their offense firing, Pfeiffer's frequent trips to the free-throw line kept them within striking distance. A crucial three-pointer from Baker narrowed the gap to 64-66 with six minutes remaining. Despite five ties in the second half, the Knights couldn't snatch the lead until a pivotal rebound opportunity allowed Baker to score a game-tying layup, knotting the score at 75-75 with a mere seven seconds left.
With the game on the line, Pfeiffer sought a winning opportunity, but Sam Jex's clutch steal and assist to Matthew Hale at halfcourt proved decisive. With the buzzer sounding, Hale launched a three-pointer that found the net, securing the victory and halting a four-game losing streak.
Baker led the charge for the Knights once again, racking up 29 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Malakai Olson and Tyler Kartchner also contributed double-digit points with 13 and 10, respectively.
The Knights look to continue this momentum on Saturday, February 10th, when they face William Peace University with tip-off at 4:00 PM.
