Lynchburg, Va - The Southern Virginia University Knights took on the Randolph College Wildcats in a double header on Thursday afternoon. The Knights had two tough contests and split the two games, winning 7-6 and losing 11-10.
The first game was a back and forth battle between the two teams. The Wildcats took advantage in the bottom of the second, pouncing first, taking advantage of a wild pitch to score their third run, creating a 3-0 lead.Â
The Knights wasted no time in the top of the third, taking advantage of a few fumbles from the Wildcats. With the bases loaded, Emmaline DeGroot drew another walk, bringing in Chloe Nelson. Chloe Persinger knocked in another two Knights with a single to center field. Sophia Badell followed suit with another single to center to take the lead. Continuing the barrage of bombs beyond the bases to center field, Abby Southern singled to bring in Badell, ending the inning with a 5-3 lead.Â
The Wildcats clawed back to tie game one in the bottom of the third. Persinger responded with her third RBI of game one bringing in Dykell Jones to reclaim Southern Virginia's 6-5 lead. The Wildcats and Knights continued to battle back and forth. Malia Davis had the last say in scoring cementing the Knights 7-6 win in the top of the sixth. DeGroot recorded her first pitching win of the season.
The Knights fell short in the second game, losing to the Wildcats 11-10. The Knights had an explosion of offense in the top of the fourth, scoring seven of their ten runs. Jones continued to contribute with her bat recording three hits and three RBIs. Nelson took three trips around the bases, while recording two hits and an RBI. The Knights made an effort in the top of the seventh, but fell short with the tying run on base.Â
The Knights will return to Buena Vista on March 23 to face the William Peace Pacers.
