Southern Virginia Baseball is Defeated by Washington and Lee, Finishing 1-1 Against Them This Season

Lexington, VA - The Southern Virginia baseball team has now concluded their 23rd matchup against local rival Washington and Lee University. The Knights were victorious earlier this season, but today were unable to score a single run against the Generals as they fell 0-14 in the 7 inning game. Southern Virginia is now 10-13 all-time against W&L.

One might assume that a shutout might denote a slow day in the batter's box. This was not the case today. The Knights accumulated 7 hits in 26 at bats, with 3 doubles and 5 walks. They left players on base at the end of each inning of the game, totaling 11 LOB. Simply enough, the Knights could not find a way to score despite giving themselves multiple opportunities to do so.

2B Mitch Smith ended the day 2 for 2 and 1 walk, being the Knight's most efficient batter this game. In addition to making it on base every time he came up to bat, Smith also advanced to 3rd base in both the 4th and 6th innings. However, Smith had to watch each inning end from there as no one could drive him home. Another standout batter was 1B Stockton Hall, going 2 for 4 on the day.

The Knights defense was unable to have much success against the Generals offense. Washington and Lee ended the day with 11 hits, 9 RBIs, and 3 stolen bases. The Southern Virginia pitchers gave up 14 total runs, only 6 of those being earned. 5 total walks and multiple wild pitches gave W&L plenty of opportunities to advance base to base freely and add to their total run count. The Knights defense had 5 total fielding and throwing errors, each of which also directly or indirectly led to the Generals adding to their score.

The Knights look to shake off their loss as they travel back home for a 3-game series this weekend against USA South Conference opponent North Carolina Wesleyan University. Game 1 will begin at 2pm this Thursday, March 21st.
