Buena Vista, Va. – Southern Virginia Softball hosted their first home games of their 2024 season against Eastern Mennonite University on Tuesday. However, the Knights efforts didn't show on the scoreboard losing both games in their double header, 5-0 and 4-1.
The first game was a solid defensive outing for the Knights, averaging less than one run allowed per inning. The Eastern Mennonite defense was tough on the Knights only allowing four hits, preventing the Knights from capitalizing on any of their four hits
After a tough first game the Knights jousted for the second. Madiline DeGroot opened up the scoring, smashing a triple to left field, bringing in
Chloe Persinger to give the Knights the 1-0 lead.
The Knights shielded the field for five innings, shutting out Eastern Mennonite. The Knights fended off a siege of the Royals offense, leaving four runners on base. They battled back with four hits and five left on base, keeping the Royals defense on edge.
Eastern Mennonite found a way around their defense and scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning. The Knights fought their way back in the bottom of the seventh, with
Chloe Nelson recording her second hit of the game. The Knights rally was cut short with the tying run up to bat, with
Chloe Nelson and
Arianna Hall on second and third.
The Knights will continue their season with a doubleheader against Guilford on Saturday, Mar 9.
