Buena Vista, Va -The Knights got back to their winning ways by overwhelming Greensboro College in a women's lacrosse USA South Conference matchup. Southern Virginia scored early and never looked back for an 18-1 victory.
In recent years, the Knights have had the upper hand on Greensboro and were searching for their fourth consecutive win over the Pride dating back to 2019. At the sound of the first whistle the Knights used a quick draw control to stride into the attacking zone for the first goal of the game, immediately putting the Pride on their heels. Kiah Baisden was the one to strike first, leading a total of 10 different Knights who eventually found the back of the net by the end of play. Kenzie Poulsen, who had her fingerprints all over this game, scored the sixth and final goal of the first quarter to help the Knights jump out to a 6-0 lead after fifteen minutes.
Poulsen would be at it again in the second quarter by tallying twice more, eventually ending the day with 4 goals, a career high. Hannah Bangerter formed a dynamic tandem with Poulsen as she assisted on 3 of those goals and finished the contest with 4 points. McKayla Martin joined the fun and used a couple of nice solo efforts to score two goals in the second quarter. Perhaps the best moment of the first half came when Knights defender Ellie Patterson retrieved a high pass in front of the opposing goal, spun off of a defender, and rifled her shot past the goalkeeper for the final goal of the half and a 13-0 lead.
The Knights' attack cooled off in the second half as they opted to let the game clock tick further down on most possessions. With the commanding lead they were able to give different players a chance to operate on the attack. Baylee Bruce and Mariela Perez switched from their typical defensive positions to the attacking side and made contributions offensively. Bruce was particularly noticeable and added a goal and an assist to her name.
Greensboro showed some jump in the fourth quarter and were led by Grace Dobson. Dobson scored the Pride's only goal of the game on a nice individual effort by slicing through two Knight defenders before sending one into the back of the net. Baylee Bruce's goal would be the last marker of the day with 6:27 remaining on the clock before the Knights locked things down defensively and would coast to their second conference victory of the season, 18-1.
Reagan Bullock had a superb outing by racking up two goals and a total of four points. She also caused two turnovers and was instrumental in allowing the Knights to dominate in draw controls, finishing with a 15-6 advantage over the Pride. Southern Virginia will have an opportunity to add to their offensive momentum when they host Centre College on Friday, April 5th at Knights Stadium, start time for the game is slated for 2:00 PM. Centre will be the last non-conference opponent on the schedule for the Knights.
