Southern Virginia Women’s Lacrosse Leads Wire To Wire, Advances To USA South Semifinal

Buena Vista, VA - It was another successful day for the women's lacrosse team as they dominated Brevard College for a 16-2 victory in the USA South Tournament. The win marks the third consecutive year that the Knights have advanced past the quarterfinals since joining the USA South.

Southern Virginia was quick to pounce on the Tornados, jumping out to a 5-0 lead by the end of the first quarter. They had five different players score those goals to showcase their improved scoring depth throughout the season. Brevard looked to make things interesting by scoring two of the first three goals in the second quarter, but the Knights weathered the storm as Piper Searle completed a first half hat trick to extend their lead to 9-2 before the halftime break.

At the beginning of the third quarter, Brevard appeared to have the field tilted in the direction of Southern Virginia goalkeeper, Madison Sorensen. The Tornados had three free position shots that sailed wide of the net and were stopped by Sorensen on two other occasions. The flurry of stops served as a boost to the Knights as they would hold Brevard scoreless the rest of the way and grab the momentum back. Kiah Baisden led the charge around the field by scooping up 7 ground balls to lead both teams in that category. Addison England also managed to control 4 draws which allowed Southern Virginia to control possession for most of the afternoon.

The Knights seemingly put the game away by the end of the third when Piper Searle extended the lead to 12-2, they took advantage of the running clock and were perfect in preserving their lead. Roxy Lebaron would net the last goal of the game with just over two minutes remaining in regulation, a well deserved goal for her after another stellar defensive performance. The Knights dominated in shots, 40-9, and were perfect on their four free-position opportunities.

Southern Virginia advances to the semifinal round to face the #1 seed Methodist Monarchs after their first round defeat of Greensboro College. Methodist narrowly took their regular season matchup with the Knights by a score of 15-14, a sign that it should be a very competitive matchup.
