Grottoes, VA - The Southern Virginia Baseball team extended their winning streak by clinching six victories in their last seven games, boosting their season record to 10-13 (6-6). They achieved this feat by sweeping Mary Baldwin University in a three-game series.
In the first two games, the offense dominated, overwhelming the Fighting Squirrels with 15 hits in game one and 13 hits in game two, securing victories of 12-3 and 12-2, respectively. Carson Bybee and Chase Smith pitched effectively, allowing just three runs and seven hits combined in nine innings during game one. Seth Lloyd delivered an outstanding performance, going five-for-six at bat and scoring three runs. Noteworthy contributions also came from Nick Daynes, who went 3-for-6, and Stockton Hall and Mitch Smith, both of whom secured two hits, leading to the 12-3 triumph.
In the opening game of the doubleheader on Saturday, despite the Squirrels tying the game at two apiece, Zack Geertsen stifled their offense with five innings of no-run ball. Harrison Moore provided effective relief pitching, conceding only a single hit in 2.2 innings. Geertsen's offensive prowess continued as he went three-for-five, accumulating four RBIs. Ty Martinez also made significant contributions with two hits and a walk, along with two RBIs. Hall and Lloyd once again delivered with two hits each.
The final game of the series was a closely contested affair, with strong pitching performances sealing the deal for Southern Virginia. Ben Agnew pitched four innings, allowing just two hits in relief to secure the win, while Harrison Moore closed out the game effectively with two solid innings, conceding only one run. Geertsen's outstanding form persisted as he went 4-for-5 in the series, accounting for half of the Knights' hits on the day. Daynes and Smith contributed with doubles and RBIs as Southern Virginia clinched a 5-3 victory, leaving them tied for fourth in the USA South standings.
The Knights will temporarily step away from conference play as they face Apprentice on Thursday, June 9th. Southern Virginia previously defeated the Builders with a 14-10 win just a week prior.
