Rocky Mount, NC - The Southern Virginia baseball team concluded their 2024 season at the USA South Conference Tournament with a challenging series of matches against Greensboro College and N.C Wesleyan University, unfortunately falling short in both encounters.
In the first game, the Knights struggled to match the offensive prowess of Greensboro College, falling behind 4-0 after just three innings. Despite their efforts, Southern Virginia managed only two hits in the game, resulting in a 2-14 defeat.
The second game of the day presented another tough challenge for the Knights, facing off against the formidable #1 seeded N.C Wesleyan Battling Bishops in back-to-back matchups. Although Southern Virginia aimed to keep the game competitive, N.C Wesleyan's strong batting performance, including three-run homers in the 3rd and 4th innings, quickly put them ahead 9-0.
Southern Virginia showed resilience in the 6th inning, scoring both their runs after Geertsen's leadoff single set the stage for Nick Daynes' RBI single to right field. Mitch Smith's walk advanced Daynes to second, positioning him to score off Marcelino Leonardo Jr.'s single to center.
However, these runs proved insufficient as N.C Wesleyan sealed the game with a final score of 2-14 in the seventh inning.
Despite the challenging outcomes, Southern Virginia's season was marked by significant achievements, including their inaugural trip to the USA South Playoffs and their highest number of conference wins since joining Division III, finishing with a 10-11 record in conference play.
