Southern Virginia Softball Wraps Up Season At USA South Conference Tournament

Misenheimer, N.C. - The Southern Virginia softball team concluded its season with defeats against Mary Baldwin University (5-6) and William Peace University (5-12).

Entering the conference tournament for the second time, the Knights faced a tough first-round loss against Mary Baldwin, succumbing 5-6 in a closely contested match.

Southern Virginia seized an early advantage with Sophia Badell's three-run homer over the left field fence, securing a 3-0 lead. However, in the bottom of the sixth inning, Mary Baldwin surged ahead, leading 4-3. Undeterred, the Knights rallied in the top of the fifth, with Emmaline DeGroot's leadoff single and strategic small ball play, including Maddion Lloyd's sacrifice bunt and Arianna Hall's sacrifice fly, pushing them to a 5-4 lead.

Yet, Mary Baldwin managed a walk-off victory in the bottom of the inning, clinching the game. Despite tallying only five hits to Mary Baldwin's 11, Southern Virginia's Malia Davis performed admirably on the mound, pitching six innings and conceding only two earned runs.

In the second game against William Peace University, the Knights found themselves trailing early, facing a daunting 6-0 deficit after the first inning. However, they gradually narrowed the gap, with Chloe Persinger's RBI walk and another homer from Badell, this time a two-run shot, bringing the score to 6-3. Despite offensive efforts, including singles from DeGroot and Mattison Christensen, and multi-hit performances from DeGroot, Christensen, Lloyd, Badell, and Abby Southern, the Knights couldn't overcome the deficit, ultimately falling 5-12.

Southern Virginia concludes another notable season, boasting the most conference wins in university history with an 11-7 record in conference play.
