Men's Soccer Dominates on Opening Weekend

Washington D.C. - The Southern Virginia men's soccer team is off to a hot start after a goal-filled two games at the Gallaudet Tournament in Washington D.C. The Knights posted two clean sheets, defeating Valley Forge 7-0 on Friday evening before toppling Gallaudet 13-0 on Saturday.

Game 1

In their season opener, Southern Virginia got out of the gates quickly by tallying three goals in the opening six minutes of play. Ben Simister and Ammon Lewis both found the back of the net twice, helping the team build a 6-0 advantage by the end of the first half. The offense slowed down in the second half with Dante Leguizamon netting the lone goal of the half in the 78th minute. However, starting keeper Dallin Chappell and the defense kept the door shut to preserve the Knights' first victory of the season. Freshman Landon Stock made history in his collegiate debut, showcasing his playmaking ability with four assists. The performance leaves Stock as Southern Virginia's all-time record holder for assists in a game, breaking the record of three assists set by Greg Larsen in 2003.

Game 2

In their second game of the tournament against Gallaudet, the Knights' offense picked up right where they left off. Brock Hester was the first to strike the back of the net for the second consecutive game after a feed from Ben Simister. Following a goal by Jacob Cornejo, Landon Stock scored his first collegiate goal to build a 3-0 lead for the Knights heading into the second half. Even with the secure lead, the team didn't let off the gas pedal. By the end of the day, eight different Knights tallied goals, highlighted by a hat-trick from Stock who also led the team with four shots on goal. Mark Niepraschk, Jackson Erb, Hunter Grange, Dante Leguizamon, and Evan Catten were the other Knights to score goals. Dallin Chappell split time in goal with Isaac Northcutt who was subbed in to start the second half. They combined for another clean sheet with Northcutt making two saves in his collegiate debut.

The team will return home to rest before a road trip to Tennessee where they will face Maryville College on Friday, September 6th. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
