Southern Virginia Falls to Randolph-Macon in Hard-Fought Match

Buena Vista, Va—The Southern Virginia University women's soccer team faced a tough challenge as they traveled to Randolph-Macon College, ultimately losing 1-3 in a competitive match.

From the start, the Knights were on the back foot, with goalkeeper Gardner making multiple saves to keep the team in the game. However, the Yellow Jackets broke through to score the opening goal in the 25th minute, putting the Knights behind early.

Southern Virginia responded with a strong 10-minute offensive push, but after a substitution, momentum swung back to Randolph-Macon, who capitalized with a second goal just before halftime. Gardner tallied eight saves in the first half, showcasing a solid defensive effort.

In the second half, the Knights made a change in goal, but the Yellow Jackets' potent offense continued to apply relentless pressure, limiting Southern Virginia's attacking options. Despite this, midfielders Lauren Fowler, Ella Thomas, and Maybel Harris led the charge in the middle of the field, helping the Knights regain control with a series of short, methodical passes.

The Knights' perseverance paid off when Courtney Pack scored the team's first goal of the season, narrowing the gap and reigniting their hopes. The final 15 minutes of the match saw Southern Virginia becoming more aggressive as Randolph-Macon's press began to wane. However, a late goal by the Yellow Jackets in the 86th minute sealed the match, leaving the Knights with a 1-3 defeat.

Southern Virginia will continue its ODAC campaign as it faces Roanoke College next. Both teams are seeking their first win of the season.
