Women's Volleyball Sweeps Hollins in Bridgewater Tri-Match

Bridgewater, VA - The Southern Virginia University women's volleyball team traveled to Bridgewater, Virginia for a tri-match with Hollins University and Bridgewater College. The Knights split the two matches and came out of the weekend with an impressive sweep over Hollins.

The Knights came out swinging in the first set against Hollins, jumping out to an 11-3 lead. Kaylie Hanna led the Knights early on with three quick kills before her teammates joined in on the fun. Hollins made a late push to come within two points but Southern Virginia scored six consecutive points and capped off a first set win with a service ace from Brookelyn Madland. Madland, who finished with 14 kills and an impressive hitting percentage of .650, continued her dominant play and helped the Knights to an even larger lead in the second set at 12-3. Freshman Baylee Savage provided excellent play during the set as well, tallying two of her five kills in the match just moments apart to put the set out of reach for Hollins.

In a potential match-clinching third frame, Hollins showed promise by drawing even with Southern Virginia through six points. However, another dominant run put the Knights in a comfortable lead and they coasted home to their second straight win. Another freshman, Claire Grasteit, performed well when called upon and finished the match with her first three collegiate kills for a hitting percentage of .600. Katelyn Wankier led the way at the net defensively with four block assists in just one set before resting for their second match of the day.

Sydney Bassett was the Knights best attacker in their match with Bridgewater later in the day, adding 15 kills to follow-up her record breaking performance at Randolph on Wednesday.

Next on the schedule, the Knights will travel to North Carolina next weekend for a Tri-Match with Brevard and NC Wesleyan in Rocky Mount. Their first match against Brevard is set to begin on Saturday, September 21st at 12:00 PM
