Buena Vista, Va. – Southern Virginia University President Bonnie H. Cordon has named Josh Monsen as the university's interim director of athletics.
"I'm truly excited about the opportunity to contribute to the transformative experience that Southern Virginia University offers," said Monson. "Watching our student-athletes grow—not just as competitors, but as individuals who excel academically, socially, and spiritually—has always been the most rewarding part of my time here."
Monsen first joined Southern Virginia in 2018 as the sports information director, a role he held for two years while enhancing the university's athletic communications. After a successful three-year (2020–23) tenure as assistant athletic director for academics and operations, Monsen became deputy athletic director in 2023, where he oversaw key aspects of the department's growth and development.
"Josh is a thoughtful leader and has been a great strength in our athletic program," said Dryden, Southern Virginia's previous athletic director. "He is relentless in improving the experience of our student-athletes while pursuing competitive excellence. He constantly challenges himself and others to innovate and improve."
As he steps into his new role, Monsen is dedicated to enhancing the student-athlete experience by upholding the university's values and Code of Conduct.
"I aim to build on the strong foundation laid by Deidra and the previous athletic directors," Monsen explained. "My focus will be on maintaining our competitive edge while fostering an environment where our student-athletes can continue to grow and excel both on and off the field in a Christ-centered environment."
"I want to express my deep gratitude to Deidra and President Cordon for their mentorship and this opportunity," Monsen continued "To our student-athletes and staff, I'm excited to work alongside you as we continue to build on the traditions and values that make Southern Virginia University such a special place."
