Buena Vista, VA - After delays before kickoff, including severe weather, the Southern Virginia University women's soccer team took the field in the late hours of Saturday evening for a matchup with the North Carolina Wesleyan Battling Bishops. It was the first match in USA South for both squads, who battled to a 0-0 draw, each team earning one point in the conference standings.
The Knights, who were looking to win their 13th consecutive game over conference opponents, were quickly tested by a speedy N.C. Wesleyan squad. Southern Virginia faced early adversity just past the ten-minute mark when starting keeper Katrina Gardner had to be replaced after a small collision at the edge of her box. However, Chloe Miller took her spot in the cage for the Knights and performed admirably. The Bishops looked to break through the Southern Virginia defense with the speed of their forwards and launched several shots toward the Knights' goal that sailed wide. Southern Virginia Head Coach Rob Dahl continued to use the Knights' depth to his advantage, making several substitutions just past the midway point of the first half. Chloe Miller made a couple of saves in the half's final minutes to send both teams into halftime scoreless.
In the opening moments of the second, the best scoring opportunity of the game came off the foot of Lucy Skidmore, who nearly found herself one-on-one with the keeper. Unfortunately for the Knights, Skidmore's shot from ten yards out was comfortably detected for a save. Moments later, Courtney Montes tested the keeper from well out but another quality save from Grace Walls kept the game scoreless. The Bishops eventually put together scoring opportunities of their own but Miller was up to the task. Ultimately, the defense was the victor in a 0-0 stalemate. Chloe Miller and Katrina Gardner split another clean sheet as the Knights continue their undefeated streak in the conference.
The Knights will travel to Salem College for their next matchup, another USA South opponent. Kickoff is scheduled for Tuesday, September 24th, at 4:00 PM.
