GREENSBORO, NC – The Southern Virginia University football team faced a tough matchup against Greensboro College, falling 23-42. The Knights kept the game close through the first half but could not contain a strong third-quarter push from the Pride.
Southern Virginia trailed 0-7 at the end of the first quarter, but the offense found some rhythm in the second quarter. Tyreeck Hall powered the Knights' ground game, scoring one of his three rushing touchdowns to narrow the gap. The Knights went into halftime trailing 10-14 after Hall's efforts and a Gage Butler field goal, keeping the contest tight.
However, Greensboro came out strong in the third quarter, putting up 21 unanswered points to take control of the game. Despite another two rushing touchdowns from Hall, Southern Virginia couldn't recover. The game ended with a 42-23 final score.
Hall was a bright spot for the Knights, rushing for 110 yards on 13 carries, averaging 8.5 yards per carry, and scoring all three of Southern Virginia's touchdowns, including a 53-yard run.
Quarterback Isaiah Maxey completed 17 of 34 passes for 198 yards, but the Knights struggled to capitalize through the air, with Maxey throwing two interceptions and being sacked eight times. Tucker McCormick led the receiving corps with five catches for 57 yards, including a long of 24 yards.
Defensively, the Knights had standout performances from Damon Brown, who picked off two passes, and CJ Williams, who added an interception. Jacob Seawright contributed two sacks, giving the Knights key defensive plays despite Greensboro's offensive pressure.
Greensboro outthrew and outrushed Southern Virginia, ultimately controlling the game in the second half.
The Knights now return home to host Brevard College on Saturday, October 5th, at 1:00 p.m. in Buena Vista, VA, as they look to bounce back.
