RALEIGH, N.C. - Despite a second half equalizer from Benjamin Simister, the Southern Virginia University men's soccer team couldn't find their golden goal, losing in overtime to William Peace and ending their season in the USA South tournament.
The Knights faced a daunting task on the road, facing the defending champion Pacers as their first round opponent.
After a seesaw first twenty minutes, William Peace found the back of the net in the 26th minute. Both teams attempted four shots in the opening frame as the Pacers took the slim lead into the break.
In the second, the attacking duo of Tate Hickman and Benjamin Simister was at it again. After establishing himself in the box, Hickman provided a one-touch pass to Simister, who wired a shot into the left side of the goal.
The Knights found themselves in a familiar spot, tying a postseason game to force overtime for the second straight season. They outshot the Pacers 5-2 in the second.
Unfortunately for Southern Virginia, things didn't fall their way in the overtime period. After drawing a penalty, a Pacers attacker drilled a shot past Troy Chamberlain to send William Peace to the semifinals.
It ends an adversity-filled season for the Knights, who were searching for an upset victory after filling the net with five goals during their regular season finale.
It also brings an end to the career of forward Benjamin Simister, who's produced one of the best offensive careers in program history.
Looking Ahead
Payden Pemberton's squad now shifts to the offseason. With only two seniors on the roster, there is plenty of room for optimism moving forward as they search for their first USA South Championship in program history.
